Writers Block

What is writers block?
Remember that essay that was assigned to you a week ago and is now due tomorrow? That you didn't remember until 10pm and now you are stressed to complete it before its due. That is the perfect example of writers block! You knew it was due, but you distracted yourself with everything else until the night before it was due, and you had no choice but to do it. Writers block is not only procrastination but also not knowing how or what to write about.

How to relieve a little stress:
  • Don't set your expectations too high that there is no possible way you can meet them.
  • Don't worry about your introduction, start in the middle and fill in the blanks later.
  • Don't worry about grammar and spelling those things can be fixed at the end.
  • If you are still stuck, take a short break and come back to it with a clear head.
  • Break the project into smaller parts and do it little by little
  • Create a calender doing only certain parts at a time, over a period of time.
  • One of the most important things is no social media or any other distractions!!
  • Write a zero draft following some of these tips:

High, Middle and Low Style Writing

What exactly is HML Style?
HML stands for high, medium and low which are three different types of writing styles.

When to use high style:
Believe it or not almost everybody has probably heard of or even read a piece of high style writing. The most common high style writing would be something like the Holy Bible. It uses big words, perfect grammar and professional format. It sounds very educated, but would not be used for an essay or college application. The easiest way to remember high style writing is to remember something very fancy and high class such as a guy wearing a suit and tie.

When to use middle style:
Middle style is mostly used when you are writing an essay. You want it to sound professional but not so professional that you are using huge words that nobody else understands. It should also have good grammar, spelling and format. The best way to remember middle style writing would be to think of somebody just wearing comfy clothes such as sweatpants.

When to use low style:
Low style writing is used more than any other type of writing, especially in the past 5 years. As technology is starting to advance, almost everybody texts as their form of quick communication. Most people use slang and abbreviations to spell words and they almost never use proper punctuation or maybe no punctuation at all. It can be hard to understand and would make you look very uneducated if you used it in a college application or even just an email to your teacher. The best way to remember this style of writing is to think of somebody that dresses more poor.

Narrative Writing

What is narrative writing?
The narrative writing style is used when you are going to be telling a story. This is with the intention of teaching the reader a life lesson usually from your own experience.

Important things to know!
When formatting a narrative paper you need to make sure you include; an introduction, plots, characters, setting, climax and most importantly a conclusion.

To help layout your paper you can use an outline such as the one below.

Experts Say...
Narrative essays should be making a point, if it is not making a point a narrative essay is not the correct writing style. They should also be written from a clear point of view to help with creativity. You also want to make sure you are using clear language and grammar throughout the entire essay. This includes using keywords that help to express emotions. You can also use 'I' that does not mean that you want to use it repetitively. Using it few times throughout the paper is okay. Last but not least, be organized in your writing!
